! Media Relations Program:
Our Speaker for this program
was Jessica Rye, APR. She has nearly seven years of experience in
agency, government and corporate public relations. She currently
serves as NASA’s primary spokesperson and public affairs officer
for the Space Shuttle Program at the Kennedy
Space Center.
Ms. Rye presented an
interactive program on strategic media relations titled- “the Good
the Bad and the Ugly.”
Topics covered included:
- Various
types of media and how, what and when to pitch to them

Public
relations professionals’ “Love Hate Relationship” with the media

McCurry’s
Five C’s (Credibility, Candor, Clarity, Compassion and Commitment)

Various
ways to pitch a topic/story (News Release, Photo Release, Media
Alert, B-roll, PSA, Guest Editorial, Feature Story)

whom a public relations professional should pitch their
topic/story (Is it a Business, Feature, Education, Health,
Science, Sports or Arts story?)

Ms.
Rye also covered crisis management in her program. She used
the Shuttle
Columbia
Tragedy as an example.
After the program, Ms. Rye
answered student’s (not to mention Dr.Davis’s and Stanberry’s)
questions. Everyone who participated in the program received an
STS 107 (Columbia’s
last mission) badge.
